Clinton security swipes phone, deletes photo

Security detail for Hillary Clinton took away a phone from a man who snapped a photo of the former Secretary of State during a speech in Miami Thursday.

It’s a relatively minor incident that may provide a big window into the perils of a Clinton presidential candidacy in the new media era.

Andrew Rothberg told The Miami Herald that security deleted a picture he had taken of Clinton on stage from his Galaxy Note II smartphone.

“It’s crazy,” Rothberg said.

“That’s American politics,” said a docent, one of a handful of hotel security and volunteers who roamed the aisles looking for people taking pictures or making recordings. None was allowed.

“I wanted to take pictures for my girls; I have four girls,” Rothberg, who was writing a piece about the conference for Boca Raton-based Grey Matters Magazine, told the Miami Herald. “I think Hillary Clinton who is probably running for president in 2016 would want all the publicity she could get and I think it’s kind of ironic they would take the camera away.”

Rothberg said he was more puzzled than upset. He said he guessed at one point that Clinton’s handlers might have wanted to control the event to keep activists from infiltrating the event and raising awareness about issues like the attacks in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11, 2012. But he wasn’t sure.

Clinton’s speech was before a travel agents convention in which she largely avoided policy and current events.

While she’s technically a private citizen at this point, the 2016 presidential aspirant certainly can’t expect her appearances to be private, especially when media are invited in the room.
This could be the case of a single rogue, overzealous security agent.  Clinton’s team can’t possibly think they’ll be able to stifle all the recordings and images that will be taken of her over the next two years leading up to her White House decision.

And if they try, it’ll end up causing them more problems than it’s worth.
